Mr. James is a 1977 graduate of the Saint Louis University School of Law. He was admitted to practice in Ohio that same year.
From 1978 to 1997 he maintained a private law office as a solo practitioner in Cincinnati, Ohio, with an emphasis on Criminal Law. Mr James also provided extensive representation in the general practice of law, including Domestic Relations, Landlord/Tenant, Personal Injury, Juvenile, Probate - Wills, Estate Planning and Administration, Adoption, Guardianship, Bankruptcy, Worker's Compensation, Corporate and Real Estate Practice and Civil Litigation.
During this period Mr. James maintained an extensive criminal and traffic practice in Mayor's Courts, Area Courts, and Municipal, Juvenile and Common Pleas Courts throughout southwestern Ohio.
Mr James has previously been certified for death penalty representation as lead trial counsel and trial co-counsel pursuant to Rule 20 of the Ohio Supreme Court Rules of Superintendence for the Courts of Ohio, and has participated in the defense of five capital cases, two as lead trial counsel.
Mr. James has argued cases extensively in the First Appellate District Court of Appeals and has had cases submitted to the Ohio Supreme Court.
In May of 1997 Mr James joined the staff of the Law Office of the Hamilton County Public Defender as a Municipal Trial Attorney and remained in that position until December of 2001, undertaking defense of individuals charged with Misdemeanor criminal offenses.
In January of 2002 Mr. James was selected to serve as General Counsel for the Law Office if the Hamilton County Public Defender. In this capacity Mr. James undertook supervisory responsibilities for staff attorneys, coordinated Arraignments - lock-up, walk-in and video - in both Municipal Court and the Court of Common Pleas, oversaw the appointment of counsel, acted as liaison for the various County holding facilities e.g. Justice Center, Queensgate, River City, Reading Road facility, and continued to conduct trials for individuals charged with Misdemeanor and Felony offenses.
In May of 2011 Mr James was selected to serve as the Deputy Public Defender for the Law Office of the Hamilton County Public Defender. In this capacity Mr James undertook supervision of all Division Directors within the Public Defender Law Office, coordinated the registration of private counsel wishing to participate on the various private attorney rotation panels, oversaw procedure for filling vacancies as they occur within each Division and in general assists the Public Defender in the running and operation of the office and the implementation of office policy and procedure.
